I Grew Up Inside This Work

My name is Mark Johnson, and I am a second generation hypnotherapist. I did not discover hypnosis in a weekend seminar. I grew up around it, watched it change lives up close, and eventually built my own practice on it. Along the way I learned the difference between hypnosis that soothes and hypnosis that transforms, and that difference is exactly what I teach.

Today I train practitioners across the country through Good Vibes Hypnosis Training. Live, and I want to be straight with you about why. The class runs on a method I call the three D's: Discussion, Demonstration, and Doing. We go through the manual together on screen and break down the mechanics of a technique. Then I demonstrate it live with a student volunteer or an outside subject so you watch the whole thing unfold. Then you go into a private Zoom breakout room with a classmate and trade sessions, taking turns as hypnotist and as client. That last part is the whole point, and it depends on having partners in the room with you. Recordings exist as a backup if life interrupts a day, but watching a video is not the same as sitting in the chair and doing the work.

Yes, and my honest advice is do not quit your day job on day one. I did not leap into the void myself. I spent several years writing code for a living, including a stretch programming for match.com, while seeing clients on evenings and weekends and slowly building up. That is the path I recommend, because it takes financial survival pressure off the table and lets you focus on getting good. Some students move faster. I had one buy an office condo before our class even finished. But easing in is not a lesser version of this, it is the sustainable version. You learn this work by sitting in the chair and doing sessions, and the practice grows as your confidence does.

Hypnosis is a self regulated field, and in most of the country there is no state licensing board or government exam standing between you and practice. Your professional standing comes from certification through a recognized body such as IACT. That said, a handful of states do have specific rules about what you may call yourself in your marketing, or ask unlicensed practitioners to use a simple client disclosure form or register with the state. We go through the rules that apply to you in class, so you are not guessing when you set up your website and your intake paperwork. If you already hold a clinical license, that license remains your baseline authority and you are in a strong position from the start.

It happens, and having an answer ready is the difference between panicking and staying in charge of the session. I had a very analytical client sit with me who, after twenty minutes of deep relaxation work, announced that he was not hypnotized, that he could still feel the sofa underneath him and hear the air conditioner running. He was right about all of it. Hypnosis does not switch off your senses or knock you unconscious. So I asked him to close his eyes, imagine standing up, and slowly turn a full circle three times. On the third turn he dropped straight into his fourth birthday party, describing the pinata hanging over his head. You will leave here with a whole library of those quiet nudges, one for every kind of brain that sits in your chair.

The program totals 220 hours and certifies through the International Association of Counselors and Therapists, and your first year of membership and certification is included in your tuition. To earn the certified hypnotherapist designation you attend all 110 hours of live class, complete 110 hours of self directed study on your own time, which includes the reading list, the video library, and at least five complete hypnosis sessions with people outside of class, turn in a written homework assignment, pass the multiple choice exam we take in class during the final module, complete a short online ethics course through IACT, and submit one audio recording of an interactive session. The exam sounds more intimidating than it is. We take a practice test together first, so you walk in knowing exactly what to expect.
